Year 11 Geography
Although next year timetables are yet to be finalised, course selection is now finished. Any changes to student courses will now take place in January.
Course Description
Teacher in Charge: Mr R. Parker.
Geography focuses on the relationship between people and the environments that they live in. This course is designed for students who wish to gain a good understanding of the world they live in and the challenges it faces.
NCEA Level 1 Geography provides students with the broad, foundational knowledge needed to support specialisation at Levels 2 and 3. The Big Ideas in Geography are overarching ideas that cover geography teaching and learning.
There are four big ideas that we study in Level 1:
• Environments connect people and people connect to environments
• Environments are shaped by natural processes
• Knowledge involves the relationship between people and environments
• Perspectives and power influence environments.
There are now four new geography assessments in Level 1. These include two internal assessments and two external assessments. All the achievement standards are now worth 5 credits each. External standards are: Demonstrate understanding of natural processes within NZ and Demonstrate understanding of geographic decision-making in New Zealand or the Pacific. Internal standards examine: Demonstrate understanding of the spatial distribution of Natural Hazards and its impacts within NZ, and requires students to explore environments using data.
