Year 9 Design and Visual Communication

Course Description

The focus of this course is to provide students with practical and useful drawing and designing skills that aim to prepare them for Yr. 10 and beyond. Students will start to use a variety of Design and Visual Communication techniques which will help them in future if they take a pathway in the design world. DVC will teach budding architects/designers everything from how to accurately draw 3D designs – both by hand and computer – to design theory. ... An integral part of the course is the development of practical design skills.

Course Overview

Term 1
Skills: Drawing
We begin the year with instrumental drawing and freehand designing skills. Leading into using the 3D printer and a car design task.

Term 2
Design: Rockets
Aerodynamic and structural elements of a rocket design are explored as the students create a bottle rocket and launch it in a competition of height and flight.

Term 3
Spatial Design: Treehouse
We look at construction and structural elements within design. How to ideate a spatial design and develop freehand drawings. finalising the design as a computer-generated presentation.

Term 4
Condense: Taniwha
The student will finish the year creating a Monster/Taniwha relating to a culture bringing together all the skills and knowledge learnt over the last year as final presentation piece.
