Year 12 Physics
Course Description

Physics is the study of the physical world and related phenomena. Students will make sense of the physical world through practical and problem-solving activities. This will help them expand their ability to think, understand scientific language and symbols, relate to others and act independently. Physics is recommended for courses at tertiary level relating to the medical profession, architecture and design, engineering, electronics, aviation, geology, computing and meteorology, among many others.
Course Overview
Term 1
We build on the skills and knowledge you gained from the investigations carried out in Level 1 to complete a portfolio of experimental reports for the first internal achievement standard worth four credits.
The second half of the term is dedicated to investigating the structure of the atom and nuclear physics. This is also an internal assessment worth three credits.
Term 2
We will be delving into the world of mechanics – the physics of moving things and how we can numerically measure physical phenomena. This is an externally assessed standard and is worth six credits.
Term 3
Here we investigate the wild and wonderful world of Electricity – Electrostatics, circuits and then electromagnetism.
This is an externally assessed standard and is worth six credits
Term 4
Revision for the external NCEA examination.
Recommended Prior Learning
It is recommended that students have passed the level one physics investigation 1.2
It is also advised that they have a strong understanding of algebra and trigonometry.
