Year 11 Practical Art

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Mrs K. Saunders.

Visual Art is not only an art form, but it is a way of seeing the world. We teach in a way that encourages ākonga (students) to examine and respond to their world. In this course, ākonga learn to work independently to construct meaning, produce artwork, and respond to and value others' feedback and criticism. They learn to use their imagination to engage with unexpected outcomes and explore multiple solutions.

Visual Art ākonga will learn and develop many skills in art-making, using a wide range of different processes and techniques: drawing (observational & expressive), painting, printmaking, collage, mixed media and digital photography (basic skills). This foundation course enables ākonga to grow their personal art-making style that will support and empower them in their future choice of expression.

The course structure is designed to promote independent work habits and develop knowledge and skills chosen by our ākonga. This course is divided into two stand-alone units & one optional unit of work all exploring a central theme - Tūrangawaewae (A Place to stand):

Stand-alone unit #1: Mural painting ‘Portraying Our Kura’ / resolved artwork (Waka Paddle Installation) exploring our Kura, the significant site of Te Ranga and our People. Contemporary painting processes and a range of media will be used.

Stand-alone unit #2: Practice-based Visual Inquiry / exploring visual art processes and conventions to inform students own artmaking  - short fun workshops exploring dry and wet media (including spray paint, acrylic paint, mark making, printmaking), based on established practice, that will give our akōnga exposure to many different mediums, art styles and chances to learn and upskill.

Optional unit #3: Body of related artworks / NCEA folio panel exploring the concept of Tūrangawaewae. Drawing (observational & expressive), painting, printmaking, and mixed media processes will be used.
